Art, in Merida?!
Ellen Fields from YucatanLiving.com has just announced the arrival of the Yucatan Living Summer 2009 Merida Art Map. This project that started out on a whim is now in its the third seasonal edition. The useful map has the name, phone number, and operating hours of the galleries, studios and museums in Merida’s centro historico, and it makes it easy for visitors to check out the artists and craftsppeople creating work there in the Yucatan. The map can be found in restaurants, hotels as well as in the galleries. The MACAY – Museo De Arte Contemporaneo Ateneo De Yucatan – has it at the entrance, so if you don’t see it there, just ask for it.
The local gallery owners have noticed that people are walking into their galleries carrying the maps, so they really like the idea of it. We have also told the Yucatan state government about it and they now carry it in their official information booths downtown.
We will be publishing the map on a quarterly basis, so the next one will come out in the beginning of September 2009 for the fall season. We hope to expand it to include more advertising and to maybe include some more detailed information about local artists, and the museums or galleries.
Merida has a growing art community, but it’s still very small, which makes it a fun community to get to know. People who live here, or visitors to the city can get their hands around it. It’s possible to get to know all the local artists, find favorites and get to know them as people. All of the art around here is probably for sale, and some of it is quite reasonably priced. We have decorated most of our house with art that we have bought on the streets here in Merida or from the artists directly and it’s a rewarding endeavor for everyone involved. — Ellen Fead Fields YucatanLiving.com
