There are many things that can happen to trigger a memory and the sense of smell plays a large part in this. The smell of a flower, the smell of rain, the smell of a favorite meal can bring back memories of childhood or the memories of travel.
So the last couple of mornings I’ve woken up to a strong smell of fire and smoke. I think the nearest fire to where I am currently is up in Napa and then there are all the fires up in NorCal that are burning with abandon because there aren’t enough firefighters. Anyway, I am in Berkeley and covered in a haze of smoke.
When I wake up in the morning I keep wondering what that smell is. It is familiar, and it also brings memories of something far away, although I can’t quite grasp it.
And then I remember.
And if any of you have traveled inland in The Yucatan for any length of time you’ll know where I’m going.
When I wake up with the smell of smoke, I am transported to the backroads of The Yucatan, where random fires are set on the side of the road to burn the garbage that is thrown there. I remember being overwhelmed at times with the smell of garbage burning while traveling by bus from Valladolid to Chichen and then again from Chichen to Merida.
Funny the things that bring on memories.
Tell us about your Yucatan travel memory that has been triggered by the sense of smell.
