Desayuno in The Yucatan, as well as all over Mexico, is a simple start to the day. Breakfast usually consists of nothing more than café con leche or té, a few slices of fresh sweet bread with butter and jam, and is sometimes served with fresh fruit in season. This is especially the case in the hostels or hotels where breakfast is incluiso.
When wanting tea to caffeinate your morning, ask if the tea is negra or herbal. Most places in The Yucatan serve Chamomile/Manzanilla when you ask for tea, which as we all know, has the opposite effect of caffeine!
Coffee is difficult to find. Good coffee even harder. Some hotel restaurants do not serve it, some do, such as the higher-end ones, and none of the hostels had it. If you are really addicted to it, then it might be a good idea to ask the desk clerk if they offer it with breakfast or if you’ll have to go out on your own in the morning to find it.
And of course, Huevos Rancheros, Omelettes, and other breakfast items can be found in the restaurants throughout The Yucatan, and are readily available in the hotels along the playa. — KK
